Generic Viagra is better known as Sildenafil – Sildenafil is the generic form of the Viagra® brand. Both drugs work in the body in the same way.
A generic version of Viagra has been approved by the FDA.
Sildenafil citrate is an active ingredient in medications used to treat the symptoms of erectile dysfunction (ED) and is found in both generic sildenafil and the proprietary form of Viagra. Branded Viagra, it is manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer.
Viagra was produced before generics – Pfizer was the first manufacturer of drugs based on sildenafil citrate and in 1996 issued a patent for it. However, in 2003, the patent for Viagra expired, which allowed other manufacturers to produce their own generic Viagra. The branded version of Viagra can still be purchased, but the brand name can only be used by Pfizer.
Generic Viagra was not originally intended as a cure for erectile dysfunction, instead, it was first tested as a heart drug for the treatment of hypertension and angina pectoris, but clinical research has shown that some men may get easier erections. As a result, Viagra was introduced in 1998 for the treatment of ED.
Generic Viagra works in the same way as branded Viagra – both generic and branded forms of Viagra work the same way and give the same results. Both work by increasing blood flow to the penis, making it easier to achieve and maintain an erection.
